Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1996
What is your primary product or service?
Consulting geological and geotechnical engineering services to the heavy construction, mining, and engineering sectors. We specialize in figuring out geotechnical solutions and are well regarded for our work in rock excavation and rock stabilization for large cuts, foundations, tunnels, and shafts.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Graduate as geological engineer from the University of Arizona, with broad experience in mineral exploration and mining geology, applied rock mechanics, principles and practices of rock blasting and mechanical excavation, design of foundations and earth retention features, remediation of abandoned mines and their associated environmental problems, subsidence prediction and control, rock hazard abatement, control of rock fall and landslides, and many related issues.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
SGS is most heavily involved in larger projects with complex geotechnical issues that require innovative or creative solutions. Our personnel have worked on projects involving rope and helicopter access, drilling and reconnaissance geological data collection on remote sites requiring difficult field logistics, technology evaluations and novel applications of new or developing technologies, special problems in rock blasting with heavy traffic or sensitive receptor sites nearby such as historical buildings, traffic, or cultural resources; special studies to evaluate and control construction disturbance, and so on. SGS focus on problem-solving. As such we work heavily with construction contractors.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Tucson, but we work internationally as well.
