Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I've worked as a Decorative Artist for over 25 years.. 12 years in NYC and 13 years as owner of Finishes First in Tucson, Arizona.
What is your primary product or service?
We create high-end faux finishes, murals and motif work, decorative and unusual plaster treatments -- such as plaster that replicates textured reptile skin, bas relief sculpture, bricks, linen, fabric, suede, or crinkled metal (endless possibilities.) We do Lusterstone, and glass-like Venetian plaster. Also, we can paint any variety of realistic faux marble for concrete fireplaces, columns, etc.; of course, we can create lovely patinas such as glazing, and color-washing. In terms of surfaces, our finishes can be applied to walls, kitchen cabinetry, furniture, floors, ceilings, and CDI concrete (most surfaces.) See our website and our online portfolio: www.finishesfirst.com
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Patricia says: I worked in the theatre for many years, first scene painting and other stage-crafts. When I made the segue way into decorative painting, I trained at various studios all around the US and also in Europe. I continue my artistic education with yearly master classesa and international conferences. Please read the "about us" page on our website: www.finishesfirst.com
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our work is exquisite, and we pay close attention to all the tiny details. In terms of color, we mix our own custom pigments to achieve perfect color matches.... and we produce custom samples for the client to approve before starting the job. The crew is considerate of the client's needs, making our presence in the home a "low-stress" and easy experience. Patricia has won international recognition for her skilled artistry. But, see all this for yourself by viewing our portfolio at www.finishesfirst.com
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
No plans to expand. Our size right now is perfect... with our trained crew of 4 we can accomplish most small to medium size jobs in a short amount of time... and we have other trained people we can bring on for larger projects.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Our studio is not open to the public. We meet clients (also architects, builders, and/or interior designers) by appointment only -- usually at the client's prospective jobsite: home, office, store, etc. After our first meeting a proposal will be created detailing the cost of the finishes we discuss. Then, once a small deposit is received, we create samples of the finish in the client's colors. Everything is detailed in the proposal, and there are no suprises.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash, check -- and PayPal if you wish to use a credit card.
Which areas do you service?
Anywhere.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Patricia Swanson, owner/artist -- for Patricia's interesting bio, please visit: www.finishesfirst.com
What are your hours of operation?
Generally 9am-6pm; however, exceptions can be made. Saturday and Sunday appointments are also possible.
